Get creative for RKC and win

Rainbow Kids Club is getting a makeover—and a new name.

After providing before- and after-school childcare to elementary school students in Big Bear Valley since the early 1990s, some revitalization is needed. The childcare program was the brainchild of Soroptimist International of Big Bear Valley. It is a cooperative effort among Soroptimist, the Big Bear Valley Recreation and Park District and Bear Valley Unified School District. It began with one building, purchased by SIBBV, located at Baldwin Lane Elementary School. The program grew quickly, with sites at all three elementary schools for many years.

As times changed, the needs changed, and now there are two sites, one at Big Bear Elementary School and original site at Baldwin Lane. Students are bused from North Shore Elementary and Hope Academy to the Big Bear Elementary site. Day camp is offered during school breaks.

The before and after-school childcare program was designed, and remains, an affordable program for working parents. SIBBV subsidizes tuition costs for qualified working parents, up to 50 percent in some cases.

With the new school year fast approaching, it’s time to register for the program, which will begin when school starts in August.

But back to the makeover. Look for new activities and programs as part of the after-school childcare program. Fun, along with downtime, homework time and more fun are part of the menu.

With the refurbishing, Rainbow Kids Club also needs a new name, and that’s where you come in. A Re-name RKC contest begins July 1 with entries due by 5 p.m. July 9. The winner receives a free week of RKC camp, a $100 value. The winner can elect to attend the camp before the start of this school year or save the prize for camp in winter, fall or spring.

Entries can be dropped off at the park district office at 41220 Park Ave., Big Bear Lake, or at The Big Bear Grizzly office at 42007 Fox Farm Road, Suite 3B, Big Bear Lake. Entries can also be emailed to Include rename contest in the subject line.

All entries should include the person’s name and contact information. If the person entering is a minor, parents need to include their contact information.
